MOSCOW, August 26. / TASS /. The Russian Northern Fleet’s guided-missile cruiser, Marshal Ustinov, made a professional stopover in the port of Algiers, the Fleet’s press office reported on Monday.

The visit of the sailors of the Northern Fleet will last for several days, during which the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to the Republic Igor Belyaev will board the ship. Excursions on the cruiser will also be organized for the families of the personnel of the ’embassy and representatives of the Algerian navy, “the press service said in a statement.

Northern Fleet Missile Ship Division Chief of Staff 1st Rank Andrei Saloshin and Missile Cruiser Commander 1st Rank Vladimir Kuzmin will hold meetings with the command of the Algerian navy.

During their business call, the crew will restock on food, the press office said.

The guided-missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov entered the Mediterranean Sea on August 22. The warship left the main naval base of the Northern Fleet in Severomorsk on July 3 to participate in Russia’s main naval parade in St. Petersburg on July 28. After the parade, the missile cruiser crew participated in the Russian Navy’s large-scale exercise Ocean Shield 2019. After leaving its home base, the guided missile cruiser traveled a distance of approximately 9,000 nautical miles.

Missile cruisers of this type are designed to combat the surface ships of a potential enemy and ensure the combat survival of Navy forces in distant waters. Development of these missile cruisers began in the first half of the 1970s. In total, four such warships were built. Three of them are operational in the Russian Navy.

The missile cruisers of this project displace 11,500 tons and are 186 meters long. They can develop a full sea speed of 32 knots and deploy for a distance of 7,500 miles at a speed of 18 knots. The missile cruisers in this project include 130mm AK-130 artillery guns, surface-to-air missile and strike systems, AK-630M 30mm small-caliber air defense artillery complexes and a torpedo armament. Missile Cruisers can carry a Ka-27 helicopter or its modification on their deck. They have a crew of up to 510 men.
